Oracheri Gurunathanmar

Oracheri Gurnathanmars - legends and realities.

Allow me to Begin by quoting Sri. V. C. Kunhiraman Vydier of Pallur, Chokli who had written a book “Oracheri Gurunathanmar – an amazing history”. . In his preface he laments “we hate the rule and power of foreigners and reject them, but today we are more anxious to learn and teach their History and imitate .We are not desires of knowing about our native personalities or respect the great ones .We have started only recently probably within a century or little more to record history. Our tall historical personalities –Oracheri Gurunathanmars - lived much earlier than that.’

The informations are more from word of mouth, legends and glimpses from his well-known disciple Rev.. Herman Gundert’s [1814-1893] diary. Rev. Gundert was a German Basel missionary and a great scholar. He compiled the first English -Malayalam Dictionary and translated Holy Bible into Malayalam More is known about Rev. Gundert and very little about the Gurunathanmars who was responsible for the transfer of knowledge about Malayalam language & grammer, the social history and the peeps into the Malayalam culture.

This a humble start to let the world know about the “ Oracheri Gurunathanmars “ and give them a place they deserve in history .Any informations, stories and legends are eagerly looked forward to, which h will enrich this blog.

Oracheri KudumbhaSangaom
Hi folks on the 22nd of December 2013 the descendants of “Oracheri Gurinathnamar” had a “Kudumbasangam” at Pandakkal ,Mahe, thanks to the initiative of Dr.Sugathan and his team . All were served with “Uppuma” , Pappad, Plantains and tea, before the functions started.
It started with a prayer, lighting the “Deepam”, inauguration by Dr.Sugathan, Draping the “Ponnada” on the distinguished guest by Sri.Premnath.
Sri. K.K .Marar, a scholar in Malayalam and a distinguished teacher and a student of the scion of the Oracheri Gurnathan delivered his inaugural address in a scholarly way and explained the positions occupied by the the Oracheri Gurunathans in Malabar’s history and their contribution to the Malayalm directly and indirectly. The “wave effect” generated by the Five Gurunathanmars, in the Malayalam Language, through their famous disciple Dr.Herman Gundert, who went on to create many firsts –Like the Malayalam Bible, Dictionary, the Collection of “VadakkanPattu”, the first Malayalam News Paper, so and so on it goes.
Sri Gangadharan highlighted the uniqueness of this meet and the need for such get together in the present social conditions. Sri. Premnath shed light on the historic background of the Gurunathanmars and how they achieved their high status in the society by their erudite knowledge under the oppressive, caste ridden conditions prevailing at that time. He also touched upon the “Family Tree” tracing 13 generations and how it can help ‘’the family stay together even though they are not staying together”.
Then there were cultural activities by the younger generations, followed by a “lucky dip” based on the registration number of the family members. Then those present introduced themselves and other members to the to the audience the connection to “ORACHERI” .
A coach trip was also organised to the “Oracheri Tharvad “ in Chokli for the benefit of those who had not seen the place.
All the senior family members who had completed 80years were honoured by draping “Ponnada”. About eight to nine members were honoured.
Then came the lunch –vegetarian and non vegetarian, I can only say about the sumptuous and tasty Non .Vegetarian menu-Ghee Rice topped with spicy and hot Chicken Curry, the Pappad, salads, pickle and the thick Sweet Payasam and medicated Water to quench the thirst. This alone is a sufficient reason to wait for the next “Sangamam”.
After the lunch the stage was filled with music and dance and the prize distribution for the performers. A musical chair for children, Ladies and men.
On behalf all the family members I would like to congratulate once again the splendid organisational skills of Dr.Sugathan. All the family guests nearing 200 ranging from the humble strata of the society to the elevated segment experienced a “One Family”feeling.
I take this occasion to thank one and all that participated in the get other and contributed monetarily. The members who are yet to pitch in are requested to do it as early as possible. The contributions can be remitted direct to the
Account 33402399661-State Bank Of India, Mahe.
In case you need any Clarification you may kindly get in touch with Dr.Sugathan who’s e-mail ID and contact telephone is given –sugamo_2009@yahoo.in and mob # 09447087470.
